Overview and current position

Dr. Aimilios Lallas is an Associate Professor of Dermatology the Medical School of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. He has specialized and deals mainly with the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of skin cancer and the management and monitoring of skin cancer patients.

He is currently an Associate Professor at the 1st Dermatology Department of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, which is housed in the Hospital of Skin and Venereal Diseases of Thessaloniki.

He is the co-founder and co-owner of the Dermatology Unit DERMOMEDICA, located at Leoforos Konstantinou Karamanli 60 in Thessaloniki.

He is the current President of the International Dermoscopy Society

Aimilios Lallas was born in Kavala, Greece in 1980 and grew up in Katerini. In 1997 he graduated from the 4th General Lyceum of Katerini and in the same year he entered after Pan-Hellenic Examinations the Medical School of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. He graduated from the Medical School in July 2003 and fulfilled the compulsory rural service on the island of Othoni (Prefecture of Corfu). He was trained for 1 year in Internal Medicine at the General Hospital “Georgios Gennimatas” in Thessaloniki and in the specialty of Dermatology-Venereology at the Hospital of Skin and Venereal Diseases of Thessaloniki (2009-2012)

In 2008 he completed the postgraduate program “Medical Research Methodology” of the Medical School of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and was awarded a Master Degree (MSc). In 2010, he was awarded a Doctoral Diploma from the Medical School of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, with the title: “Contribution to the role of chemoprophylaxis in precancerous lesions and skin cancer”. After receiving the specialty title, he was awarded a scholarship from the Hellenic Dermatological and Venereology Society to be trained at the Skin Cancer Unit of the Santa Maria Nuova Hospital in Reggio Emilia, Italy, in the subject: Dermatoscopy, digital imaging, prevention, diagnosis and management of skin cancer “. He then worked for two years as a specialized dermatologist at the above center.

From 2015 to 2020 he worked as an Academic Scholar in the 1st Department of Dermatology of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. On March 2020, he was elected as an Associate Professor of Dermatology at the Aristotle University.

Research activity and author’s work

He is the author of 395 original scientific papers published in international journals, available at the Pubmed Central.

To date, there have been more than 13.000 references of his work by other researchers.

Most of his research work has focused on dermatoscopy, skin cancer diagnosis and management, and the application of dermatoscopy in general dermatologic diseases. He has introduced and validated innovative diagnostic methods in dermatoscopy for the identification of melanoma, basal cell and squamous cell carcinoma and inflammatory dermatoses.

He is the principal investigator in European research projects in the field of diagnosis of melanoma and other skin tumors. He also participates in clinical trials of drugs to treat metastatic melanoma, basal cell carcinoma and radial hyperkeratosis.

Finally, he has been ranked for consecutive years among the world’s top peer reviewers.

Teaching activity

Aimilios Lallas participates in the pre-graduate teaching of Dermatology to the medical students of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in the subject of skin tumors.

He is the Scientific Coordinator of the Professional Certificate of Dermoscopy program with students from countries all over the continent.

He is co-founder and tutor of the international training course “Dermoscopy Excellence”.

He participates as a teacher in postgraduate programs at the Universities of Graz in Austria and Napoli, Italy, in the field of dermatoscopy.

He is a member of the International Doctoral Thesis Supervision Committee of the University of Modena in Italy.

He has supervised the training of many new dermatologists from several countries in the diagnosis and management of skin tumors.

Aimilios Lallas is an invited speaker in most international, American, European and national dermatology congresses in the field of skin tumor diagnosis and treatment and invited trainer at many local courses on dermatoscopy in various countries. He has performed more than 1000 lectures in National and International Scientific meetings. He has organized more than 100 courses on dermatoscopy in several countries.
